The 1st work is a pasticcio with Italian text by Francis James Child based on the Harvard University anecdote and comic ballad "The lay of the one fishball" with music consisting of pre-existing opera excerpts by Donizetti, Rossini, Mozart, and Bellini; the 2nd work is a play by William W. Pratt after the novel by Timothy Shay Arthur, with incidental music consisting principally of popular or traditional American and/or British tunes.
Includes reprint of the Italian libretto of the 1st work with English translation by James Russell Lowell and with Child's handwritten annotations of the pre-existing arias to which the texts should be set (Cambridge [Mass.] : Riverside Press, 1862).
