Biographical / Historical Note
Hugo Lawrence Summerville (1885-1948) was a photographer in San Antonio, Texas.
Camp John Wise was a balloon training station near San Antonio, Texas, established in January 1918. The United States Army Balloon School transferred to Texas from Fort Omaha, Nebraska. In May 1919, the Army closed Camp John Wise, and moved balloon companies to Brooks Field in San Antonio, Texas.

Made from an elevated viewpoint, the image depicts tents, buildings, and utility poles, as well as soldiers in the streets of the camp with motorcycles and trucks.
