Three typescript orginal and carbon copy logs of road inspection trips in the western United States made by MacDonald between 1922 and 1927. The three logs, dated July 6-August 10, 1922, June 15-July 29, 1925, and September 14-October 26, 1927, contain itineraries, mileage, remarks, and captioned photographs documenting the trips in California, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. The photographs document road conditions; construction projects; the inspectors; Taos Pueblo, New Mexico; and scenery, particularly Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks in Utah, the Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde, Colorado, and the Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks in Wyoming.
Among the men who accompanied MacDonald on the trips were L. I. Hewes, Deputy Chief Engineer of the Bureau, mechanics George E. Campbell and William Gildersleeve, H. S. Fairbank, and Pyke Johnson. A mounted newspaper clipping from the July 22, 1925 issue of the Rocky Mountain News regarding MacDonald's visit to Colorado and federal funds for Colorado highway projects is laid in the second log.
