Notes
Grimaldi's original ms. was first altered and revised by Mr. Thomas Egerton Wilks, who sold it to the present publisher. "The present editor ... accepted a proposal from the publisher to edit the book, and has edited it to the best of his ability, altering its form throughout, and making such other alterations as he conceived would improve the narration of the facts without any departure from the facts themselves"--Introductory chapter.
"The first issue of the first edition is bound in pink flowered cloth. The subsequent issues in black or brown cloth. The last plate in the 2nd volume "The Last Song," in the first issue has no border; in later issues there is a grotesque border round it. This border is by Alfred Forester (Crowquil), and was subsequently deleted. A further test of the first issue is, that of advertisementa at the end of vol. 2--pp. 1, 26 and 27 are unnumbered"--Cohn.
Frontispiece portrait of the author engraved by William Greatbatch; after Samuel Raven.
First ed., second issue: plate, "The last song", in second state.
