Summary
Videotape testimony of Teddy R., who was born in Oradea, Romania in 1922. He recalls his family's primitive standard of living; his uncle in the United States sending money for his high school education; belonging to No'ar ha-Tsiyoni; Hungarian occupation in 1940; confiscation of most of their possessions; draft into a Hungarian slave labor battalion in September 1943; his father visiting him in Tăşnad; slave labor in several locations including Dej; marching toward Budapest in winter with no shoes, minimal clothing and food; confinement to the Budapest ghetto guarded by the Arrow Cross; severe hunger; Soviet bombardment; liberation by Soviet troops in January; returning to Oradea; reunion with an uncle; learning his parents had been deported and killed; contacting his relatives in the United States for papers; traveling to Budapest, then Vienna; living in Linz, Badgastein, and Backnang displaced persons camps; working for UNRRA; emigration to the United States; his relatives not wanting to hear his experiences; marriage; raising his children as orthodox; not sharing his story with them; and a recent trip to Hungary. Mr. R. shows photographs and his wife briefly joins him.
