Biographical / Historical Note
John Adams Whipple, photographer and an early American promoter of the glass negative/paper positive process, called the process crystalotypy because of the crystal clear transparency of the glass negatives. He worked with the Harvard College Observatory's fifteen-inch refracting telescope, and by 1851 had obtained a daguerreotype of the moon, which won a gold medal at the Crystal Palace Exhibition. In 1853 he made crystalotypes of his daguerreotypes of the moon.
