Summary
Without benefit of clergy: John Holden, an English man works for the government in India. While in India, Holden falls in love with a young Indian girl named Ameera, and he purchases her from her mother.
The man who would be king: Two British adventurers, Daniel Dravot and Peachey Carnehan, arrive at Kafiristan, a remote part of Afghanistan, and set themselves up as kings.
