Originally issued in parts (fascicules) 1839-1842. The first three volumes have title-pages without subtitle as originally printed for these three volumes, later reprinted with the subtitle, uniform with the later volumes.
Text by Achard, Balzac, Janin, Karr, Nodier, Soulié, and many others.
Vols. 1-5 deal with general types. Vols. [6-8] (numbered 1-3) contain provincial and colonial types and have title: Les Français peints par eux-mêmes; encyclopédie morale du dix-neuvième siécle. Province.
Illustrations (408 plates, 1000 illustrations in the text) are by Gavarni, Grandville, Johannot, Meissonnier and others.
Supplementary v. [9] has title: Le Prisme; encyclopédie morale du dix-neuvème siècle.
A translation of portions of this work was published, 1840, under title: Pictures of the French.
