Summary
The Memoranda of Conveyance (Memories van Overgave) were compiled between 1849 and 1962 by officials of the Indian Civil Service in the former Dutch Indies Colonies who were in charge of local administration of the Indonesian archipelago. The majority of these officials served as "Gouverneur" or "Resident" and it was their duty to compile documentation about the administrative area for the benefit of their successors, because the term of service at a particular post was usually limited to about four years. The sometimes very detailed Memoranda contain all relevant information about the area and document the political, economic, agricultural, juridicial and military situation. Often, supplementary information is included in the form of statistics and maps.
