Biographical / Historical Note
Thomas Falconer (1772-1839), classical scholar and preacher. His son, Thomas Falconer (1805-1887), barrister and English politician, was a member of the Texas-Santa Fe expedition of 1841-42. The younger Falconer traveled for two years in North America before being appointed arbitrator on behalf of Canada to determine the boundaries between Canada and New Brunswick in 1850. He was judge of the county courts of Glamorganshire and Breconshire and of the district of Rhayader in Radnorshire, Wales, 1851-1881. Henrietta, his sister, married John Arthur Roebuck, an English politician, in 1834. J. P. E. Falconer was a mineral enthusiast and rock collector.

John Falconer about a work Whately was charged with editing and about a proper education in logic; a letter from John Arthur Roebuck to Henrietta Falconer in 1820; two letters from Thomas Falconer to his sister in 1842 and 1850 about the slim prospects for his return to England, their mother's will, Falconer family geneology, and reviews of his work; and a letter to J. P. E. Falconer from a fellow flint collector, dated 1919. Includes a printed bibliography of Falconer family members annotated and corrected by Thomas Falconer (1805-1887); a copy of the pamphlet "Falconer of Leighton", also annotated by Falconer; a printed poem in Welsh and English by Dewi Haran about a meeting with Judge Falconer in 1870; several bookplates; and a manuscript scrap noting Thomas Falconer's birth and christening in 1805. Silhouettes and photographs are of the younger Thomas Falconer at various ages.
