Summary
Peter Munk, a poor charcoal burner, after losing his wealth, abandons his bride and summons an evil spirit. Promised all the riches on earth if he is willing to exchange his heart for a cold stone, he consents and from that moment on, he becomes richer and richer, but also brutal and ruthless, even beating his own wife to death. Only then does he come to his senses, but he can only be redeemed if he retrieves his true heart from the evil spirit. He manages to outwit the evil spirit with the help of the good spirit of the forest, who brings his wife back to life.
