Collection also contains a table of contents in John's hand, which lists the correspondents, date, and subject of the letters which are numbered in chronological order, titled: "II Vol. Quarto Letters & Papers of Sir JE WIlmot etc." Some (ca. 6) letters catalogued are not present, and one uncatalogued letter to "Jack" is included.
Some letters are damaged, incomplete, or fragments, and bear evidence of having been tipped-in to a bound album or albums.

Summary
Unbound collection of personal correspondence of Sir John Eardley-Wilmot, Lord Chief Justice. Ca. 85 letters to his son John, many of which are addressed as "Jack" and sent to him at Oxford University; and ca. 11 letters from John to his father. The letters primarily concern family news and advice concerning friendship, choice of profession, religious duty, and school. Also contains 14 letters from Sir John to "E. Wilmot," which refer to separately to his brothers John and Robert, addressed from "your father" to "Eardley"; 6 letters from Sir John to J.H. Michell, addressed to "Jack"; 1 letter from Sir John to Rev. H. Michell; 1 letter from Sir John to Miss Wilmot of Duffield. Many of the letters contain annotations in John's hand which summarize the sender, date, and place of origin of the letter. One letter to John also contains postscripts from S. Wilmot ([Sarah], his mother), and M.M. Wilmot (his sister).
