Summary
Holograph journal of a three-week tour through Scotland, focusing primarily on visits to old castles. Setting off from Lancaster, the writer leaves with her companions Miss Welch and Miss Parker for Clyde, where they exclaim over gravestones and admire ruined castles, including the interior and views of Bothwell Castle. In Glasgow, they visit the Rock of Dumbarton and the castle there; on a rainy day, they eagerly approach a castle but lose interest upon discovering it to belong to a Mr Horrocks of Preston "instead of a fine old Highland chief." Elsewhere, she watches a Highland fling and describes the castle at Cairndon. Throughout, the writer pays particular attention to the behavior of servants and waiters and to the quality of her meals, tea, and lodgings.
This description is followed by a description of a journey "to the salubrious wells of Buxton," where she meets a large party and lists their names and relationships to each other; goes to a ball and a play; is taken ill; and returns home after a month. The manuscript concludes with 11 pages of notes of visits by and to friends, including two who visit on their way to a tour of the Lakes; a visit to a friend who gives birth; a visit to Harrogate with a companion in order for him to take the waters for his skin condition; and a visit to "a fine ruin of a castle" belonging to the Duke of Devonshire. This section also includes an observation on the sincerity of the serving class, and a lament upon the lack of sincerity in "the higher walks of life."
