Manuscript, in a single hand, contains about a thousand entries on a wide variety of subjects, including agriculture, science, heraldry, peerage, pedigrees, and poetry. Strathern notes his ownership of the notebook and his professional career as a law genealogist, and many of the entries are related to his profession. The volume includes illustrations of heraldic shields accompanied by explanations; the pedigrees of Michael Sadler, MP, and the actress Mrs. Jordan, also known as Dorothy Bland; and numerous notes on parish registers Strathern visited, especially as they pertain to destruction or mutilation of such registers. Elsewhere, he makes notes under such headings as The Earth; Human life; Slavery; Anatomical demonstrations; Manufacturies; To destroy moths; To make catsup; and A trick with cards. Other entries in the volume pertain to personal memoranda. Many of the entries are from Nottingham, including a recipe for French polish by Henry Wild M.D. of Nottingham and A poetical description of Nottingham.
The manuscript also includes several illustrations. On p. 445-448 appear a series of pen and colored wash illustrations of stones, and on p. 290 is an illustration of "an easy iron chair" belonging to Dr. Cade of Spondon, Derby.
