Biographical / Historical Note
Swynfen Jervis (1700-1771), whose name appears on the bookplates, was a descendant of a family of Meaford in Staffordshire. He became solicitor to the Admiralty and in 1747 treasurer of the Greenwich Hospital. His son John became first lord of the Admiralty and was created Earl of St. Vincent.
Summary
Manuscript, in a single hand, of a chronological history of Anglo-Norman England compiled from copies of a large number of Latin manuscript sources and comprising more than 3,000 pages. Major sources of material include works by William of Malmesbury; Simeon of Durham; Hector Boethius; Eadmer; and John de Brompton. The last four volumes are largely derived from the works of Matthew Paris. Gaps for the years 1136-53, 1178-89 and 1200-1216 suggest that three volumes are lacking; in the fifth volume, the years 1160-72 are omitted. The volumes are accompanied by an extensive modern list of sources for the work.
