Two oil paintings, probably by an Italian artist, depicting ships of the Mediterranean Squadron of the United States Navy in the Bay of Naples, 1835.
Painting entitled "Eruzione del Vesuvio del 1 Aprile 1835" (Eruption of the Vesuvius on April 1, 1835) depicts the Bay of Naples in the background and the volcano Vesuvius on the horizon. The right foreground of the image shows a black ship of the United States navy and three cutters, all flying American flags. The left foreground of the image depicts two ships moored behind a harbor breakwater and a lighthouse. One of the ships moored behind the breakwater flies a flag of a red saltire on a white field, known as a St. Patrick's Flag, and a red ensign merchant flag of a union jack on a red field, probably designating a British merchant vessel; the other vessel and two cutters in the central foreground fly flags with a white field and an indecipherable red emblem. An individual is posed fishing on the rocks of the breakwater.
Painting entitled "Flotta Americana Napoli 1835" (American Fleet, Naples, 1835) depicts the Bay of Naples in the background and the volcano Vesuvius erupting on the horizon. The foreground of the painting shows four black ships of the United States navy and three cutters, all flying American flags.
