Peter Eric Palmquist (1931-2003) of Arcata, California, was a prolific historian of photography who collected historical and contemporary photographs and research materials about photographers.
Summary
This collection consists of daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, and collodion processes primarily mounted in contemporary decorative cases, collected by Peter Palmquist to document photographers, photographic processes and presentation techniques in the United States, especially in California, and in Great Britain, circa 1844-1899.
A group portrait of seven men identified as prominent San Francisco businessmen by Robert H. Vance may include the following individuals: Cornelius Cole, Charles Bull Crocker, John D. Selby, William Sharon, William Tecumseh Sherman, William Walker, and Joseph W. Winans.
Associated printed items consist of trade cards for photographers; advertising materials; newspaper advertisements, including issues of The Boston Daily Bee; and engravings based on daguerreotypes.
Examples of components used in the construction of cased photographs consist primarily of cases and mats.

Indexes/Finding aids
An appendix in the finding aid provides a concordance of numbers applied to the material by Peter Palmquist and the corresponding number assigned by the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library.
Finding aid available.
The sum of quantities of photographs in the extent field of the physical description of this catalog record (371 photographs) does not match the sum of item entries in the finding aid (335 items) because some item entries possess two or more photographs. The same distinction applies to the cases and components.
