Notes
Description of contents based on material provided by the vendor, Moshe Rosenfeld. Manuscript book of prayers for small German-Jewish community, written by Naftali Hirts ben Yisrael. In original wooden and tooled leather covers with brass hinges. Calligraphy and illuminations in sepia ink using Central-European motifs, such as animals, flowers, and crowns. Prayers according to the local custom with directives to the prayer leader in Judeo-German. Many of these payers are described in the work, Teudat Shelomoh, by Shelomoh Hazan (Offenbach, 1718): Mi she-berakh prayers for the Sabbath and other days when the Torah is read; a piyut "Ehad yuhad" [i.e. Ehad yahid] by Avigdor ben Isaac Kara, d. 1439, which the hazan would recite before the groom, then a prevalent Ashkenazic custom, though unknown today; the congregational kiddush for Sabbath and holidays; the prayer for the new month, showing the custom to begin the blessing for the new month with the paragraph "Mi she-asah nisim" [the One who has done miracles]. Also includes a prayer "Ha-noten teshu'ah la-melakhim" for the kings and government with honorific titles written in German in Hebrew characters. Especially noteworthy are the memorial prayers ("YizkorÖ") for well-known rabbinic scholars, including Rashi, Rambam, and many others.
