Summary
Typed travel narrative attributed to Mildred J. Netsch, possibly prepared for publication, describing a young woman's tour of Canada, the Yukon, Alaska, and the western United States. Pictures and maps from brochures, as well as various pieces of memorabilia, are pasted on leaves and interleaved. Items include 16 photographic postcards, many of Alaska by Ordway of Juneau; menus from Jasper Park Lodge, the S.S. Tutshi and the Canadian Pacific Railway Steamship Triangle Service; a copy of the Cruise News, a newsletter published on the S.S. Prince Rupert; an illustrated concert program and a passenger list for the S.S. Prince Rupert; and various tickets and labels that Netsch collected during her travels. The narrative traces the route Netsch took from Buffalo across the Canadian prairies to the Rockies and Vancouver, British Columbia, up the West Coast to Alaska, and her return route through Victoria, Seattle, Idaho, Montana, Chicago and Cleveland. The bulk of the book (p. 1-115) relates to the Canadian and Alaskan leg of her journey. Netsch traveled by train, car, bus, and steamer during her trip, traveling to and from Alaska via the S.S. Prince Rupert and the White Pass & Yukon Route train. The narrative details Netsch's experiences as a woman traveling alone, describing interactions with fellow travelers, observations about her transportation, and descriptions of scenic points of interests: Jasper National Park, Mount Robson, Pyramid Falls, Prince Rupert, Skagway, Whitehorse, Ben-My-Chree Lodge, Juneau, Mount Rainier National Park, and Glacier National Park.
