Summary
Samuel is planning to jump off a pier and drown himself. While he is gathering his courage, an older man, a sailor, arrives who has come for the same reason. The sailor declines Samuel's invitation to join him in the jump and instead invites him back into town where they begin a two-day carouse. Eventually Samuel meets the sailor's deaf-mute daughter and falls in love with her.
