Biographical / Historical Note
Rockwell Kent was an American painter, printmaker, illustrator, and writer.
The collector, Charles J. Rosenbloom (1898-1973, Yale 1920), was a Pittsburgh financier, philanthropist, art collector, and bibliophile. He bequeathed his book and manuscript collection to Yale University.
Summary
The collection consists of 10 of the 25 original drawings made by Rockwell Kent to illustrate The Canterbury Tales of Geoffrey Chaucer; together with a version in modern English verse by William Van Wyck (New York: Covici-Friede, 1930). The drawings were mounted on pieces of illustration board. All the drawings are signed Rockwell Kent in pencil at lower right. The images in the collection are: The Host; The Knight; The Cook; The Sailor; The Physician; The Pardoner; The Friar; The Summoner; The Nun; and The Parson.
