Biographical / Historical Note
Edward Roberts, godson of Sir Edward Walpole, was Clerk of the Pells in the Receipt of the Exchequer in England.
Summary
Manuscripts, in multiple hands, of a collection of documents relating primarily to the office of the Clerk of the Pells, especially in regard to the salary of that position. The volumes contain lists of appointments to that office and their salaries; allowances made to them; letters requesting salary increases from Parliament and Treasury officials; and documents relating to Isaac Barre's appointment as Clerk of the Pells, including fees paid for being sworn into office, a note describing his duties, and a letter by him to Roberts asking he send this documentation, "in case Mr. Pitt should write to him." Other items include Treasury minutes relative to the appointment of Mr. Lloyd, first clerk to Mr. Grenville as teller of the Exchequer; An account of standard weights and measures; and a list of expenses incurred by messengers of the Court of the Exchequer.
