Biographical / Historical Note
This work was attributed to Sir Walter Raleigh (1552?-1618) by John Milton, who saw to its publication in 1658 as The Cabinet Council. It has more recently been attributed to Thomas Bedingfield, who first translated Machiavelli's Storia fiorentina into English (1595).
Summary
Manuscript, on paper, in a secretary hand, of a treatise on politics, diplomacy and statecraft. Many sections appear to be paraphrased from Machiavelli's works. Headings include "Matters extrinsick and how to deale with neighbours;" "Of power and force;" "Of Diffidence and dissimulation;" and "Of Civile Warre."
