Biographical / Historical Note
Clarence Johnson Messer (born 1858) was a journalist for the Boston Evening Transcript and the author of "Evolution of the Puritan" (1899), "Next Night Stories" (1911), and "Mr. Responsibility, Partner" (1912).
Neal Dow Benedict (1859-1948) was an entrepreneur and founding member of the Connecticut and Alaska Mining and Trading Company, which prospected the Copper Basin region in 1898. Benedict wrote a manuscript about his experience, "The Valdes [sic] and Copper River Trail, Alaska, with 158 photographic views, 1899." A microfiche of the manuscript held by the Alaska State Library Historical Collections accompanies the collection.
Summary
Album compiled by Clarence Johnson Messer including photographs created by Neal D. Benedict that document a journey to and through Alaska from March to August 1898, as well as photographs that depict the Pacific Northwest, circa 1890-1900. Benedict created 170 photographs in the album that document a journey from Seattle, Washington, to the Copper River region of Alaska, via Valdez and the Klutina River. The images, which depict life in the Alaskan wilderness and settlements along the Klutina River and Copper River, include miners, gold mining camps, mills, settlements, rivers, and glaciers. The album includes manuscript captions and a typescript of an article written by Messer. The album also has seventy photographs of sites chiefly in Alaska, Oregon, Washington, and northern California, as well as images of Texas, Nova Scotia, and Maine.
