Biographical / Historical Note
George C. Kemp (1870-1947) was born in Cowley, Oxford, England, and immigrated to the United States, probably in 1891. He worked as a photographer, watch maker, jeweler, and optometrist in San Francisco, California. He was a brother of Edward H. Kemp, who worked as a photographer and filmmaker with his wife, Josephine A. Kemp, in San Francisco and the American Southwest.
Summary
Commonplace book kept by George C. Kemp, which includes notes from courses on geography, history and French language studies, as well as extensive notes on photography, watchmaking, and jewelry repair, 1889-1891, and clippings and other ephemera from 1892-1894. Photographic notes include a list with technical data for 122 images made in England from January 1889 to September 1891, as well as an undated list of ninety negatives of images made in California.
The volume includes ephemera related to Atlantic City, New Jersey. This material consists of dance cards for subscription dances held by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in November 1892 and the Morris Guards military organization in January-February 1894, as well as a commencement program for the Atlantic City Public Schools in June 1893.
