Ira Glackens (1907-1990), son of realist painter William Glackens, associated with the Ashcan school and the group of artists known as The Eight.
Summary
Collection of approximately fifty-five autograph letters, the bulk dating from 1924 to 1936, from Ira Glackens to classmate and friend Frederick Darby Petrie. Letters document student life during the interwar period and the artistic and social activities of the Gackens family during sojourns abroad. Letters address: people and events at the Choate School, where the young men met; Ira Glackens's literary ambitions and efforts; Petrie's letters from Princeton University and MIT; people from the family's circle, including art collector Albert Barnes; and Parisian society life. Enclosures include drafts of poems, photographs, hand-colored cards, and clippings. Accompanied by letters from Edith Dimock Glackens, Lenna Glackens, and others.
