Biographical / Historical Note
Christfried Kirch (1694-1740) was the son of the astronomer and calendar maker Gottfried Kirch. From 1716 to 1740 Christfried was an astronomer and calendar maker at the observatory of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin.
Summary
Holograph document containing Kirch's astronomical observations and calculations for the year 1719, including five engraved and colored plates depicting the partial lunar eclipse of August 29, 1719. The observations are divided into nine sections, dealing with the eclipse, stellar occultations, measurements of the solar ecliptic, remarks on the five known planets, and meteors. Kirch also describes his use of the observatory's equipment, recording the focal length and settings of his telescopes.
