Biographical / Historical Note
Thomas Hearne (1744-1817) was a watercolor painter and topographical draftsman. He served as draftsman to Sir Ralph Payne, Governor-General of the Leeward Islands, from 1771 to 1775, and is perhaps best known for his role in the engraving series The Antiquities of Great Britain (1778-1806). Hearne traveled extensively within England and Scotland, and is known to have visited Wiltshire in 1797.
Summary
Album containing twelve mounted pencil drawings, and one mounted pencil and sepia wash drawing, of farmhouses and cottages by Thomas Hearne. Most of the subjects are identified in a later hand.
The album also contains thirty-two mostly mounted pencil and pencil and wash drawings of rural characters, engaged in activities such as netting birds, setting traps, blacksmithing, walking with children, and slaughtering a bull. These have been attributed to William Henry Pyne.
