Biographical / Historical Note
Dudley Nichols, American screenwriter and film director. Nichols wrote the screenplay and directed the 1947 film version of Eugene O'Neill's dramatic work Mourning Becomes Electra.
Summary
Collection of correspondence regarding Nichols' 1947 screen adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's Mourning Becomes Electra, from early discussions of the script to comments regarding the film's critical reception. Correspondents include O'Neill; scene designer Robert Edmond Jones; Theatre Guild directors Lawrence Langner and Armina Marshall; Theatre Arts magazine associate editor and film critic Hermine Rich Isaacs Popper; actor Katina Paxinou and her husband; and actor Rosalind Russell. Also included is a carbon typescript "Script and Production Notes" consisting of character descriptions, act synopses and notes on sets and costumes; censorship reports; and a newspaper article regarding the film. Additional correspondence consists of a 1955 letter to Nichols from Carlotta O'Neill describing her health, a planned visit to O'Neill's grave, and memorials to her late husband, accompanied by typed transcripts of inscriptions by O'Neill to Carlotta and other documents annotated by Carlotta, and a 1956 letter from Dick Prince in which he discusses the letters of Walter, a mutual friend of Nichols, Prince and O'Neill.
