Biographical / Historical Note
Walter William Fell (1762-1848) was a schoolmaster at Manchester, Wilmslow, and Lancaster, and lived after retirement at Warrington and Clifton. In addition to his teaching, Fell also published several books, including Hints on the Instruction of Youth (1798) and A Sketch of the Principal Events in English History (1811, 1813).
Summary
Manuscript fair copy of a critical work that opens with the argument that a knowledge of Latin is not required by commercial and mercantile students, and does not contribute to the development of a literary style in English. Fell then proceeds to critique the grammar, sense, and style of several authors who also lived in the Warrington area, particularly T. K. Glazebrook and Edward Lloyd.
