Summary
As an intellectual biography of Freda Utley, ex-Communist, anti-Communist author associated with the China lobby, this project explores her conversion to anti-communism in the context of the political, cultural and historical situation of the 1940s and 1950s. Underwriting such a study are questions of the relation between identity, gender and ideology. I argue that Utley attempted to resolve identity conflicts stemming from an underlying ambivalence about gender through successive ideological practices.
