Summary
In Shanghai, the second wife of a landlord watches each tenant closely, because she worries about not being able to collect the rent from those poor tenants: an elementary school teacher out of salary from school, two dancing girls with slow business, the owner of furniture with a number of children and an ill wife, Yuan out of job from a silk company... Yuan's wife wins the lottery, but they put all of the prize in an underground bank which goes bankrupt. All tenants live in poor condition as always, but they learn how to help each other ...
