Summary
Videotape testimony of Aaron S., who was born in Dobrzyń nad Wisłą, Poland in 1925. Mr. S. tells of his father's death in the army in 1939; German neighbors his mother hid during the Polish withdrawal; being driven from town with his family by those neighbors; joining relatives in the Mława ghetto; public hangings and shootings; obtaining false papers and Catholic training; and leaving the ghetto in 1941 (he never saw his family again). He relates living with a Polish farmer in Płońsk; joining a resistance organization; living in bunkers in the forest near Łomża; capture by Germans; transport to Birkenau in September 1942; training as a bricklayer; constructing Auschwitz; an unsuccessful escape attempt with a Pole who befriended him; confinement in the Politische Abteilung; help from a fellow prisoner; interrogation by Rudolf Höss; and the camp's evacuation. He describes the death march to Gleiwitz; a sadistic SS guard; transport to Gross Rosen, then Dachau; staying in a typhus quarantine block; transfer to Mühldorf; clearing bombing rubble; liberation from a train near Tutzing; his inability to join in the revenge against the guards; helping to establish Feldafing; and his reasons for giving testimony after so many years.
