Biographical / Historical Note
Emile Zola was a French novelist, playwright and journalist. He was known as a practitioner of literary school of naturalism. Zola played a major role in defending the French officer Alfred Dreyfus, who was accused and convicted of treason against France. Zola defended Dreyfus in his famous newspaper opinion titled "J'Accuse...!," which he wrote to the French president in January, 1898.
Summary
Based loosely on Mathew Johnson's 1928 biography of Emile Zola, a French author, who attempted to help clear Army captain Alfred Dreyfus. Dreyfus was a French officer of Jewish ancestry and was charged with treason and convicted in 1894. His trial went down in history as the Dreyfus Affair.
