Papers include materials created or collected by Franklin Hutchinson (1920-1997) during his work in Yale's biophysics and biochemistry departments from 1973-1997. Materials include correspondence, a report on the health effects of low frequency electromagnetics, department and committee work, including investigations into the authenticity of the Vinland Map, and photographs.

Biographical / Historical

Franklin Hutchinson (1920-1997) was a biophysicist with an interest in radiation biology and mathematics. He earned a bachelor's degree in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1942 then joined the Radiation Laboratory at MIT. He earned three patents in microwave electronics for his work on the development of radar during World War II. In 1945 he began graduate studies in physics at Yale, completing a PhD in 1948, then joining the biophysics program faculty. In 1960 he became professor of biophysics in the newly formed department of molecular biophysics and biochemistry, later serving as department chair and director of graduate and undergraduate studies. Hutchinson taught at Yale until 1990 and continued his research as Emeritus Professor until his death.

Hutchinson joined the Radiation Research Society in 1953 and published regularly in Radiation Research. He was a member of the American Physical Society and the International Union of Biophysics.
