The American Dental Association (ADA) was formed in 1859 in Niagara Falls, New York to promote good dental health. The headquarters of the organization are located in Chicago, Illinois. The ADA lobbies for policies related to dental care, provides accreditation for dental care professionals, and tests and endorses dental products.

Fluoridation of public water supplies to promote dental health in the United States began in 1945. The ADA endorsed the fluoridation of water in 1950, after which they began producing printed materials supporting the practice.
