Burney family collection

 Collection
Call Number: OSB MSS 3

Scope and Contents

The collection spans the dates 1767-1903, but the bulk of the material dates from between 1790 and 1825.

The papers are arranged in three series. Series I, Burney Family Collection, is arranged alphabetically by correspondent and consists of the papers which had been previously cataloged in the card catalog. Major correspondents represented in the collection include Charles Burney (1726-1814), the musicologist and author of A General History of Music (1776); his son Charles Burney, D.D. (1757-1817); his daughter Fanny Burney d'Arblay, the diarist and author of Evelina (1778); and other members of the Burney family. Other correspondents include Alexandre d'Arblay, William Bewley, Hester Lynch Piozzi, Thomas Twining, and John Young.

Additions to the Burney Family Collection subsequent to June 1992 are listed in acquisition order in Series II, Burney Family Collection Additions, and Series III, Addition of August 2001.

The material in Series I has been described in Joyce Hemlow's A Catalogue of the Burney Family Correspondence, 1749-1878 (New York: New York Public Library, 1971). This work, it should be noted, is an index to holdings of Burney material at several institutions, including Yale University, and the New York Public Library. For further information, please contact the curator of the Osborn Collection.
