This collection consists of writings, correspondence, printed material, video cassettes, audiocassettes, compact discs, digital files, and other papers by or relating to Eliot Weinberger. The writings document Weinberger’s work as an essayist and literary critic, his work as translating authors including Octavio Paz, Beidao, Jorge Luis Borges, and Vicente Huidobro, and his work as an editor of literary anthologies such as the New Directions Anthology of Classical Chinese Poetry (New Directions, New York, 2003). Correspondence includes extensive literary correspondence with poets and authors including Susan Howe, Clayton Eshleman, C.D. Wright, Forrest Gander, Rachel Blau DuPlessis, Marjorie Welish, George and Mary Oppen, and others. Correspondence also documents Weinberger’s work on the literary magazine Montemora, his longstanding relationship with the publisher New Directions, and with other magazines, publishers, and organizations. Printed ephemera largely consists of promotional materials for readings, talks, conferences, festivals, and other programs involving Weinberger or authors with whom he worked. Audiovisual materials document performances or appearances by Weinberger or others. The bulk of the digital files consists of email, writings, and research materials.

Eliot Weinberger
Eliot Weinberger (born 1949) is an American essayist, translator, and editor. Weinberger co-founded the literary magazine Montemora (1975-1982), and served as the primary literary translator for Octavio Paz and Beidao, in addition to translating work by Jorge Luis Borges, Vicente Huidobro, and others. Weinberger’s writings span political commentary and literary criticism, and appear in books (many published by New Directions), the London Review of Books, the New York Review of Books, and elsewhere. He has edited a number of anthologies, including the New Directions Anthology of Classical Chinese Poetry (New Directions, New York, 2003).

Opening Hours
Access Information
The Beinecke Library is open to all Yale University students and faculty, and visiting researchers whose work requires use of its special collections. You will need to bring appropriate photo ID the first time you register. Beinecke is a non-circulating, closed stack library. Paging is done by library staff during business hours. You can request collection material online at least two business days in advance of your visit, using the request links in Archives at Yale.
