Scope and Contents
The collection contains background materials, research notes, drafts, and galleys relating to psychologist Leonard W. Doob's work as editor of "Ezra Pound Speaking": Radio Speeches of World War II. The subject of the book is American poet Ezra Pound's collaboration with Rome Radio in Italy from 1940 to 1943, in which Pound created and broadcast fascist propaganda expressing anti-Semitism and criticism of the United States and the United Kingdom. His broadcasts were monitored by the Federal Communications Commission, and the collection includes annotated photocopies of FCC transcripts of Pound's broadcasts, as well as annotated photocopies of Pound's unaired radio speeches, Doob's file card index, and typescript drafts of the book.

Leonard W. Doob (1909-2000)
Leonard William Doob, Sterling Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Yale University, was an American psychologist, teacher, and scholar in the fields of social psychology, propaganda, communication studies, and conflict resolution. Born on March 3, 1909 in New York, New York, he earned a B.A. in Philosophy from Dartmouth College in 1929, an M.A. in Psychology from Duke University in 1930, and a Ph.D. in Psychology from Harvard in 1934. He also studied at the Goethe University Frankfurt in Germany from 1930 to 1933.
From 1934 to 1977, Doob taught psychology at Yale. He was affiliated with the Institute of Human Relations until its dissolution, later serving as chair of the Council on African Studies and director of the Division of Social Science. After retiring from teaching, Doob was a senior research scholar at Yale’s Institution for Social and Policy Studies. During World War II, he served as director of the Bureau of Overseas Intelligence for the Office of War Information until 1945.
Doob published nineteen books, including Propaganda: Its Psychology and Techniques (1935), Frustration and Aggression (1939), Patriotism and Nationalism: Their Psychological Foundations (1964), and “Ezra Pound Speaking”: Radio Speeches of World War II (1978). He was editor of The Journal of Social Psychology from 1965 to 2000.
Doob was a trustee of the Ezra Pound Literary Property Trust and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1936, he married poet Eveline Bates, with whom he had three sons: Anthony, Christopher, and Nicholas. He died on March 30, 2000 in Hamden, Connecticut.

Access Information
The Beinecke Library is open to all Yale University students and faculty, and visiting researchers whose work requires use of its special collections. You will need to bring appropriate photo ID the first time you register. Beinecke is a non-circulating, closed stack library. Paging is done by library staff during business hours.
