Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 456 black-and-white and color inkjet prints of photographs by Italian photographer Enrico Scuro that document Movimento ’77 and other social, cultural, and political events in Italy, 1976-1981.

The following is a summary of the main series and their contents. Photographs document:

- Radio Alice and creative Autonomia: photographs of political happenings and of a trip to Germany by member of the free radio after it was shut down by the police.

- Countercultural youth gatherings: Proletarian Youth Festival at Parco Lambro, Milan, and Umbria Jazz Youth Festival in 1976, and a festival in the Abruzzo National Park, 1977.

- Movimento ’77 and related protests: occupation of university buildings, demonstrations, construction of parade props. Riots and mass protest following the death of Francesco Lorusso. Political happenings, parades, gatherings, and a march following the death of Giorgiana Masi in May 1977. Photographs of the International Congress against Repression in Bologna in September 1977.

- Street art, murals, and graffiti.

- Marches and demonstrations following the kidnapping and killing of Aldo Moro in May 1978.

- Exhibitions and performances, including concerts by Skiantos and Patti Smith, performances by John Cage, Julian Beck and Judith Malina from the Living Theater, an exhibition by Fluxus artists and other cultural events associated with the avant-garde, 1978-1979.

- Gay Pride in Bologna, 1980.

- Organized squats of unoccupied buildings by the Tenants Union, 1981.

Notable subjects in the collection include Nanni Moretti, Dario Luigi, Angelo Fo, Tomás Maldonado, Umberto Eco, Luigi Squarzina, Julian Beck and Judith Malina from the Living Theater, Fluxus artists, and John Cage.

Inkjet prints on baryta paper, 7 ¾ x 11 ¾ inches (20 X 30 centimeters). Chiefly in black-and-white with a few prints in color (numbered 398-402, 422-424). Titled, numbered, and stamped on the verso by Enrico Scuro. Printed approximately 2021.

Abstract

The collection consists of 456 black-and-white and color inkjet prints by Italian photographer Enrico Scuro that document Movimento ’77 and other social, cultural, and political events in Italy, 1976-1981.

Enrico Scuro (1952-)

Enrico Scuro (born 1952, Taranto, Italy). Italian photographer who documented social and political events in Italy in the 1970s including Movimento del ’77. Scuro moved to Bologna at the age of twenty and enrolled in Discipline delle arti, della musica e dello spettacolo (DAMS) at the University of Bologna, where he studied photography under Italo Zannier. He chronicled the period of social and political unrest that swept through Bologna and the rest of Italy in the 1970s. He later collaborated with the photo agency Grazia Neri as a freelance photographer.

Processing Information

Collections are processed to a variety of levels, depending on the work necessary to make them usable, their perceived research value, the availability of staff, competing priorities, and whether or not further accruals are expected. The library attempts to provide a basic level of preservation and access for all collections, and does more extensive processing of higher priority collections as time and resources permit.

The guide to the collection includes Italian titles derived from inscriptions on versos of prints as well as from the photographer’s website https://enricoscuro.it, accessed in February 2023, in addition to English translations for most.

Access Information

The Beinecke Library is open to all Yale University students and faculty, and visiting researchers whose work requires use of its special collections. You will need to bring appropriate photo ID the first time you register. Beinecke is a non-circulating, closed stack library. Paging is done by library staff during business hours. You can request collection material online at least two business days in advance of your visit, using the request links in Archives at Yale.
