Scope and Contents

Collection of European topical prints and drawings by various artists and printers, some unidentified, created circa 1600 through 1904. The bulk of the collection consists of urban and rural scenes and cityscapes, primarily in Vienna, as well as other Austrian cities and towns and some cities in Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. Subjects of prints and drawings include churches, buildings, public works, palaces and castles, public squares, parks and gardens, and train stations in Vienna. Also included are general Vienna city views and depictions of towns, suburbs, and districts in and around Vienna and throughout Austria. The collection also includes printed documents with manuscript signatures, illustrated narrative scenes, a few portraits, and some unidentified images. Identified artists include Rudolf von Alt, W. H. Bartlett, Robert Batty, Tranquillo Mollo, and Jos. Trentsensky. Many prints include hand coloring.

Custodial History

This collection was previously housed in the Graphic Arts Collection at Sterling Memorial Library filed under the title "Topographical Prints, Vienna" and "Topographical Prints & Drawings, Austria - 15th-17th c." The Graphic Arts Collection was renamed The Arts of the Book Collection circa 1972.

Separated Materials

Large groups of prints and drawings by one creator were separated from the original accession and cataloged separately. These include: Therese Holbein von Holbeinsberg, Paintings of Austrian Landscapes. General Collection, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University.

Processing Information

Collections are processed to a variety of levels, depending on the work necessary to make them usable, their perceived research value, the availability of staff, competing priorities, and whether or not further accruals are expected. The library attempts to provide a basic level of preservation and access for all collections and does more extensive processing of higher priority collections as time and resources permit.

This collection received a basic level of processing, including rehousing and minimal organization.

Information included in the Description of Papers note and Collection Contents section is drawn from information supplied with the collection and from an initial survey of the contents. Folder titles were supplied by staff during initial processing.

This finding aid may be updated periodically to account for new acquisitions to the collection and/or revisions in arrangement and description.

Opening Hours

Access Information

The Beinecke Library is open to all Yale University students and faculty, and visiting researchers whose work requires use of its special collections. You will need to bring appropriate photo ID the first time you register. Beinecke is a non-circulating, closed stack library. Paging is done by library staff during business hours. You can request collection material online at least two business days in advance of your visit, using the request links in Archives at Yale.
