Scope and Contents
This collection contains literary manuscripts of the English writer Ethel May Gate (1882?-1942). A small number of other papers are also included. The collection is organized into two series, Writings and Other Papers, and spans the dates 1912-1940.
Series I, Writings , contains two subseries. The first, "Anthologies," includes manuscripts and typescripts for several of the author's collections of children's stories and poems, including Punch and Robinetta, The Fortunate Days, and Tales from the Enchanted Isles, among others, and the essay collection The Harvest of the Years. The second subseries, "Other Writings," includes manuscripts and typescripts of short stories, poems, novels and plays, as well as actors' annotated copies of scripts for many of the plays. Also included is a typescript of two acts completing Sir James M. Barrie's unfinished play, "Shall We Join the Ladies."
Series II, Other Papers , includes a letter from Joan Luxton, a tally of expenses, a personal reflection concerning the author's father, and copies of four nineteenth century popular songs.

Ethel May Gate (1882-1942), English writer, was born in Romford, Essex, England, the daughter of Henry James Gate and Ann Amelia Gate.

Access Information
The Beinecke Library is open to all Yale University students and faculty, and visiting researchers whose work requires use of its special collections. You will need to bring appropriate photo ID the first time you register. Beinecke is a non-circulating, closed stack library. Paging is done by library staff during business hours.
