Scope and Contents
The George Augustus Sala Collection consists of papers accumulated by Ralph Straus in writing his biography of Sala; and autograph manuscript correspondence and writings by Sala acquired by the Library from other sources. Papers of Straus consist of autograph letters, signed, to and from Sala, members of his family, and others; autograph manuscript writings and notes by Sala; clippings of articles by and about Sala; photographs, engraved portraits, and printed caricatures of Sala; and autograph manuscript notes and correspondence of Straus.

George Augustus Sala (1828-1895)
English journalist; contributed to the Daily Telegraph and other serials; and published collections of his articles. Sala was a son of singer and actress Henrietta Catherina Florentina Simon Sala (1789?-1860). He married Harriet Elizabeth Hollingsworth Sala (died 1885) in 1859, and he married Bessie Stannard Sala in 1890.
Ralph Straus (1882-1950)
English author and journalist. Author of Sala: the Portrait of an Eminent Victorian (London: Constable, [1942]).
Processing Information
This collection consists of materials formerly classed as MS Vault Shelves Sala, Ms Vault Sala, Uncat MS Vault 801, and Uncat Ms Vault File. In 2013, the collection received a baseline level of processing, including partial rehousing and minimal organization. The collection was reclassed under one call number, materials were organized by acquisition, and containers were renumbered in a single sequence. Most folder titles and folder notes were adapted from card catalog descriptions; some were assigned by Library staff. Chronological arrangement within groups of correspondence was retained, and card catalog see references from names of correspondents were adapted as subseries notes. Some names of correspondents were updated to conform to Library of Congress name authorities. Folder titles were not verified against contents.

Opening Hours
Access Information
The Beinecke Library is open to all Yale University students and faculty, and visiting researchers whose work requires use of its special collections. You will need to bring appropriate photo ID the first time you register. Beinecke is a non-circulating, closed stack library. Paging is done by library staff during business hours. You can request collection material online at least two business days in advance of your visit, using the request links in Archives at Yale.
