Scope and Contents

The Eckley B. C. Markle papers contain approximately one hundred letters from Markle to his mother describing his experiences during World War I in the Air Service from May 1917 to May 1919, and as a pilot in the First Aero Station from October 1918 to March 1919. The rest of the collection consists of almost four hundred photographs of friends, military equipment, views of bomb damage and aerial views.

The papers are restricted from exhibition prior to the year 1991, but may be examined and used by qualified scholars. The colletion was the gift of Mrs Eckley B. C. Markle in 1966.

Biographical / Historical

Eckley Markle came to Yale from Hazleton, Pennsylvania and entered Sheffield Scientific School as a member of the class of 1917, but never reveived a degree. He died in 1961. His service in World War I is described by George H. Nettleton in Yale in the World War, Vol. 2, p441: Eckley Brinton Coxe Markle. First Lieutenant, Air Service. May 1917 – May 1919.
