Scope and Contents

The Eugene C. Gardner Papers concern Chinese students who were sent to the United States to be educated and who lived in the home of Eugene Gardner in the 1870's. Most of the materials related to T'ang Shao-yi, first premier of the Chinese republic in 1912, and Liang Ju-hao, Chinese foreign minister.

The papers include a small amount of correspondence from China (1881-1926), a fragment from Gardner's autobiography describing some of the Chinese students, other printed and typescript material and newspaper clippings about China, T'ang Shao-yi, Liang Ju-hao, and their families.

The materials are open for research.The entire collection is available on microfilm. Patrons must use HM 282 instead of the originals.
