Scope and Contents

The Lee Hyde papers span the dates 1969 to 1977. They consist of carbons of outgoing correspondence and some incoming correspondence, 1972-1977; copies of his publications and other writings, 1969-1976; and committee reports and memoranda, 1972-1976.

The papers were given to Yale University Library by Dr. Arthur Viseltear in 1977.

Abstract

The bulk of the papers consist of correspondence, memoranda and printed matter related to Hyde's work as a professional staff member of the U.S. House Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce, Subcommittee on Health and the Environment (1972-1977). Most of the outgoing correspondence is actually by Congressmen Harley O. Staggers and Paul G. Rogers. Earlier papers consist of writings by Lee Hyde and additional memoranda. These papers form part of the Contemporary Medical Care & Health Policy Collection.

Biographical / Historical

Lee Hyde was born in Boston in 1944. He received his B.A. from Harvard in 1965 and M.D. from Case Western ReserveUniversityin 1969. He did an internship in mixed medicine and pediatrics at the University of North Carolina. Following this Hyde spent two years in the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, working in its comprehensive health planning program. From 1972 until 1977 he was a Professional Staff Member with the House Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce, specifically with its Subcommittee on Health and the Environment, chaired by Rep. Paul G. Rogers of Florida. Hyde left his Congressional post to complete his residency and pursue his career in medicine.
