Jeanette Hyland papers

This collection documents Jeanette Hyland’s activities as a missionary, nurse educator, and public health administrator in Nepal between 1969 and 1995, with a focus on her work in leprosy prevention and treatment, and the work of the International Nepal Fellowship (INF) and United Mission to Nepal (UMN) in these areas. The Hyland papers also contain materials pertaining to her personal life and her late-career research activities in Australia between 1996 and 2002. Series I, Correspondence, consists primarily of Jeanette Hyland’s personal letters to family and friends, as well as letters related to her work and official circulars (usually addressed “Dear Friends”) that she wrote over the course of her career.

Series II, Writings, contains two long-form research publications, one of which is a PhD dissertation, that Jeanette Hyland wrote toward the end of her career.

Series III, Documentation of Activities, contains Jeanette Hyland’s professional reports, summaries, educational curricula, and other organizational literature. Almost all of these documents were written or co-written by Hyland herself. The names and order of each sub-series are organized by the various positions that Hyland held over the course of her career. With only a few exceptions, the order and contents of this series have been preserved exactly as Jeannette Hyland arranged them.

Series IV, Collected Material, consists of a few published books and articles written by colleagues that Jeanette Hyland collected over the course of her career.

Series V, Audio-Visual Material, contains one unlabeled photograph and a few blank photographic postcards that Jeanette Hyland collected as well as audiocassette recordings of sermons from INF conferences in 1983 and 1994 and a recording of a UMN organizational meeting in 1986.

Jeanette Hyland also published four books: Maids, Masters, and Magistrates: Twenty Women of the Convict Ship New Grove: Maid Servants in Van Diemen’s Island (2007),Gwen Coventry in Nepal: Bhaktini of Bojha (2010), Village Nepal and the Diaries of Gwen Coventry, 1959-1979 (2011), and Suddenly Free…: Memoir of a Tasmanian Nurse (2018). All four of these books are cataloged in the Yale library system as restricted access titles and can be viewed in the Yale Divinity special collections reading room upon request.
