Scope and Contents

(701-1) Collection of slides of Japanese sculpture, painting, metalwork, lacquer ware, ceramics, and textiles. Slides are labeled only with identification numbers that correspond to plates in the exhibition catalog “Art Treasures from Japan. [Exhibition, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, September 29, 1965 - November 7, 1965, and other institutions. Tokyo, Kodansha International, 1965]” Provenance: Purchase.

(701-2) Collection of slides of Japanese art, including sculpture, painting, and lacquer ware, from the Kofun to Meiji period. Slides are labeled in Japanese with identification numbers that correspond to an English-language explanatory supplement included in Container 1. 300 slides were originally purchased following the request of Professor Terukazu Akiyama, University of Tokyo, who taught at Yale as a visiting professor in the fall of 1968. Slides in this collection were never added to the circulating slide collection due to duplication, poor quality, or lack of relevance to courses taught at the time. Provenance: Purchase ca. August 1968 from Bijutsu shuppansha (Tokyo).

(701-3) Collection of slides of Japanese painting from: 1. Japanese Ink Paintings from American Collections: Muromachi period (Princeton University Art Museum, Exhibition ca. 1976), labeled with identification numbers that correspond to plates in the exhibition catalog; 2. Ban Dainagon emaki, with identification information given in English. Provenance: Gift, ca. 1976.

(701-4) Collection of slides of Japanese paintings from the Momoyama and Tokugawa periods. Basic identification information given in English on slide mounts. Provenance: Purchase ca. 1984.

(701-5) Collection of slides of Japanese paintings from the Seattle Art Museum. Heian to Edo periods included. Slides are labeled with an AAPD identification number that corresponds to a slide identification document (included in Container 2) that gives artist, title, period, format, media and dimension information in English. Provenance: Purchase from Asian Art Photograph Distribution (AAPD), University of Michigan; date of purchase unknown.

(701-6) Collection of slides of Edo period painting, costumes, armor, sculpture, ceramics, and woodblock prints from the exhibition “Edo: Art in Japan 1615-1868” (National Gallery of Art, 1998-99). Individual slides are labeled in English with the name of the artist, title of work, repository, medium, and catalog number. Slides are organized according to catalog number. Provenance: No documentation found.
