Summary
Sir John Harcourt writes regarding Lugard's appointment as governor of Nigeria (saying that he should consider this over the post at Ceylon, which has a difficult climate). There was a delay in Lugard's reply to John Anderson as Lady Lugard (Flora Shaw) is taken very ill. Lugard replies that his life work has been in Africa and the offer must be given very serious consideration. He requests six months in England each year, given that his wife is so often unwell and the prolonged separation is too difficult. Harcourt writes back to Lady Lugard to suggest three months in England (during the worst season) and the rest in Nigeria (although it seems that they finally settle on four months in England and eight in Nigeria). There is a later letter from Walter Long who details all the problems with the experimental way in which the governorship has been conducted.
