Summary
"With his ""Syndicate"", did Joe Zawinul rediscover the feelings of the pianist he was in Julian ""Cannnonball"" Adderley's sextet in the 1960s, a band that played a festive groove? This concert is such an enchantment that it makes you want to dance like the spectators in the front rows. After having put an end to the group Weather Report in 1984 and launching the ephemeral Weather Update in 1986, which would not be as successful as expected, Joe Zawinul seems to be regenerating himself within the ""Syndicate"" he had just created in 1988. Although he is following a new path, he doesn't deviate from his synthesizers and his fundamentals as an alchemist of sometimes strange sounds. He seems to foreshadow the creation of a progressive world music. We feel Africa's presence in the tone of voices and the polyrhythms, in the sound effects of bird songs that remind us of a fantasized primeval forest, but it's steeped in the funk of African-American communities.
